Meanwhile new league leaders cruise to easy victory
In a match that had the pundits crying foul there was more than a hint of anger emanating from the Dub FC management team following the abysmal performance of the referee in their match against Adelaide. Despite the referee's obvious bias Dub ran out easy winners in a 6-1 demolition job.
The referee, who cannot be named for legal reasons, provoked the wrath of the Dub team with his sending off of midfield stalwart John Quinn at the end of the first half. Following a predictably late tackle by the Adelaide number 7 Quinn lashed out in retaliation and despite pleading self-defence the midfielder was sent to the line. The absence of a card for the Adelaide player only served to infuriate Dub even more.
By that stage though, Dub had established a 3-1 lead. After a positive start to the game from Dub, Adelaide slowly got into their rhythm finding space between the Dub full backs and their centre halves. Following a long ball in the 16th minute an uncharacteristically skewed clearance from Mark Harvey at the centre of the Dub defence gifted the ball to an incoming Adelaide striker. He couldn?t miss and didn?t. Inadvertent though it was this was the first assist of the season for Harvey.
At this point Dub looked shaky and Adelaide played the more confident football. However this was not a marker for the game as a whole and following a wicked inswinging corner from Gareth Dickson a sharp near post header from Captain McCusker drew Dub level on 28 minutes. Set plays have always been a favourite platform of attack for Dub and it came as no surprise when on 32 minutes, from a penetrating long throw from full back McGaughey, a flick on found Phil Doherty on hand to score. Dub had turned the game on its head and increased their lead following a fine piece of individual skill by Cormac Kernan. He left his man for dead near the end line before producing the perfect cross for Sean Mullan arriving late into the box. His downward header gave the Adelaide keeper no chance.
The unsavoury incident at the end of the first half did not detract Dub from their task. Following an inspiring half time rendition of ?this is a crucial match? the Dub players went out and produced probably their most impressive half of the season. After Dub?s defence, impressively marshalled by Michael Smyth and Mark Harvey, snuffed out the minimal threat of Adelaide early in the second half, Dub scored again, and it was that man Mullan again, with a volley from about 18 yards following a precise flick on from Gareth Dickson. Two minutes later it was 5-1 with Mullan this time the provider, an immaculate through ball giving Cormac Kernan the chance from which he made no mistake ? a notable goal since C Kernan has still scored in every game he?s played in this season, a new Dub FC club record. Other Dub players were said to be delighted for the striker.
The final goal of the game came from another set piece this time McGaughey?s free kick proved too hot to handle for the Adelaide keeper. Dub continued to boss the game until the end, the introduction of Peter McToale, Chris Sherrard and Kristian Hill providing fresh impetus and purpose to the Dub side.
Dub should have won by more and in the 88th minute a late entry to Channel 4?s ?100 Greatest Scary Moments? as Captain McCusker rounded off a solid display with a speculative effort from a yard out that resulted in the ball ballooning well over. Players on hand from an adjoining pitch were said to have marveled at this unique piece of skill.
Man of the Match - Sean Mullan ? the Godfather and Marlon Brando look-a-like (?) gave an industrious and creative display in midfield.
One to Watch ? Neil Smyth ? another great display from the keeper - solid, dependable and vocal.
