Dub FC Rise Above the Stench

Ormeau Park, Sunday 9 November 2003, 1:30PM

Dub FC (5)8 Collingwood (0)1

Dub FC maintained their remarkable winning record with a crushing display against an admittedly weak Collingwood side. The 'Skunks' have only recently joined the Belfast Sunday League and although it would be harsh to criticise the new-comers too much they certainly stank in this encounter. Dub, missing midfield regular John Quinn due to suspension and with Herr Murphy visiting his Fraulein in the mother land, drew on their large squad and fielded an impressive array of talent . . . and Cormac.

The promotion chasing Dub opened the scoring in the 15th minute when an excellent cross from the right by Cormac Kernan was met with a shockingly precise header from Shane 'concentrate' Mc Cusker, rising above two defenders to score. Dub dominated the midfield tussles and were aided by the creativity of wing men Gareth Dickson and recent signing Peter Mc Toal who continues to impress with his energy and tough tackling. Collingwood found themselves camped in their own half and the sustained pressure led to a corner from the right in the 20th minute delivered by Gareth Dickson. His fine cross was powerfully met by Mark Harvey who, having used his electric pace to escape the attention of his marker, reached the front post and sent a well aimed header into the bottom left corner. It was a fabulous finish and an obvious contender for goal of the season. The Dub centre half has thus kept up his incredible strike rate, averaging a goal per season.

Dub did not relent and continued to press for more goals with Phil Doherty, currently top scorer this season, a constant threat. He showed his predatory instincts in the 27th minute leaping to beat the Collingwood goalkeeper to the ball before following in with a shot into the empty net following a pass from Michael Smyth. It was to be a difficult day for the portly keeper and it was mainly due to poor finishing from Dub who rattled the woodwork on several occasions, that the scoreline did not reach double figures. Collingwood's only threat came from long balls ably dealt with by the Dub back line. Michael Smyth produced a steady display at left back and centre backs Mark Harvey and Sean Doherty snuffed out any potential attacks, with Sean Doherty dominating the aerial battles. Ryan '21' Mc Gaughey had another solid game at right back and produced two assists in the 29th and 33rd minutes setting up Sean Mullan who capped a superb display with two well taken goals. Mullan was unfortunate not to get a penalty in the 38th minute when his impressive double somersault and pike after being caught by a stiff breeze in the Collingwood box was outrageously deemed not to be a foul.

Dub ended the half 5-0 up and with the score line so one-sided the players were encouraged not to show any mercy and of course to * 'concentrate' (*copyright S Mc Cusker) in the second half. Despite this rallying call Dub could have been more ruthless after the break and missed several chances to increase the lead. Changes were made early in the half with Ryan Mc Gaughey replaced by Kristian Hill and Mark Harvey, who was bundled into a waiting taxi after firing wide from four yards, making way for Chris Sherrard. This was a clear statement of intent from the management illustrating that even the clubs greatest assets are not immune to a spell on the subs bench.

Dub, aided by the fresh legs, gradually improved and Cormac Kernan added to the lead in the 50th minute following a fine pass from Dub captain Concentrate Mc Cusker. Kernan committed the keeper and jinked/waddled to the left before firing home from 12 yards. Phil Doherty made it seven in the 57th minute with a good finish following a lob (.surely hoof) from Kernan. The magnificent Mullan was then taken off as he was threatening to catch the Dub manager in the goal scoring charts and was replaced by the flame haired wonder John Magee who produced a polished performance and was unfortunate not to get on the score sheet with some good breaks from midfield.

Dub were rocked in the 70th minute when a rare break from Collingwood lead to an unexpected but well taken strike from one of their 'skunks' who availed of the empty net vacated by Neil Smyth who had long since downed his gloves and went to the pub to watch a proper match. The Dub stopper had a solid game with a combination of consistently good kicking and vocal encouragement and deserves praise if only for staying awake during long periods of inaction. Dub responded quickly in the 75th minute with a quick counter attack down the left flank from Phil Doherty. He produced a pin-point cross into the danger zone for Sean Doherty who, despite fighting back a nose bleed in this unfamiliar territory, finished well with a volley.

Dub ended the game comfortably and reflected afterwards on another three points gained. Spirits were raised further with news that the team in yellow are now only one point off the top with a game in hand. It is too early in the season to discuss promotion but if Dub can keep performing at this level . . .who knows ????
