Dub FC's success in cup competition continued on Sunday when they progressed to the Quarter Final stages after overcoming stiff resistance from their lower league opponents who belied their position in the BSPL with a spirited and battling display in horribly windy conditions at Ormeau Park.
The awful pitch and inclement weather were against Dub in the first half as they played into the gale force wind. With the strong gusts at their back, Fort dominated the early stages with continued pressure in the Dub half. Dub mustered a few counter attacks which should have produced a goal but some inexcusably poor finishing left their supporters wondering if the team would rue the missed opportunities, and so it was on 27 minutes when Fort beat the Dub offside trap to score following a break down the Dub left and cross into the box which was forced home by the onrushing forward. The goal stirred Dub and after some pleasantries were exchanged between their centre half's the back line became more solid and Dub went into the break a goal down.
The second half was a complete reversal with Dub camped in the opposition half. The equaliser came on 55 minutes when Dub's new signing, Donal Mc Cann, who has been a revelation this season, coolly volleyed home from 12 yards. Dub then piled on the pressure and scored what turned out to be the winning goal on 64 minutes with a spectacular headed finish from sick note Michael Smith who had only been on the pitch a matter of minutes, following an excellent cross from Mick Dundee on the right. Smith's presence has been sorely missed this season and it is hoped his dribbling and dazzling with will add some spark to the league run-in.
Dub's overall performance was below par but they ran out deserved winners in the end and must now raise their game for the upcoming Quarter Final against Mona Star.
A special mention to Ryan '21' McGaughey who is leaving the club for a year to travel round the world, see some interesting countries, meet some fascinating people...and shout at them. Good Luck Ryan!
