Dub reap the rewards of the pre-season tour win in Derry and meet their latest fan - Orlaith from Big Brother.
Orlaith couldn't wait to meet the team after she heard of Dub's heroic comeback in their win against Olympic FC of Derry. The players happily signed autographs and Orlaith had her picture taken with most of the players before they left. Andy de Faoite, Dub's defensive dynamo, commented "she was quite upfront and she didn't appear artificial at all, so we didn't really mind spending some time with her as we're always keen to give something back to the fans". Orlaith stood with staff of the Da Vinci Hotel and waved the players off as they left and wished them luck for the new season.
Match Report
Dub FC's hectic pre-season schedule took them to Derry to face Olympic F.C in the latest friendly as Dub continued their preparations for the forthcoming season.
An eventful day started with an impromptu kick about in the car park of the Northern Bank as Derry played host to the talents of the Dub players. One player in particular showed some brilliant skills and pinpoint accuracy as his turn and flick sent the ball crashing into the face of a seventy three year old female spectator. Needless to say, apologies were offered and Dub made an abrupt departure.
As the temperature neared 30 degrees, the game kicked off and a sluggish Dub side struggled to make any impact. Olympic missed two early chances before eventually taking the lead on 15 minutes. An Olympic player around 40 yards out from goal picked up a loose ball and proceeded to skin three Dub players before dispatching the ball past a static Art Kernan in the Dub goal.
That sparked Dub into life, and it wasn't long before Dub started to create chances of their own. A great run and cross by Phil Doherty was met two yards out by a magnificent clearance from Dub centre forward and subsequent man of the match Chris "club foot" Hodgkinson . As the ball screamed over and wide a chorus of laughter was heard throughout the county of Derry. Moments later a knock down from Hodgkinson was met by McCann running into the box. His back heel found Patrick O'Reilly in space but unfortunately his brilliant shot went the wrong side of the post. Next up was Phil Doherty who got on the end of a wonderful cross from Hodgkinson. Unfortunately 50p head could only hit the crossbar and Olympic survived. More chances came and went for both sides in the remainder of the first half, most notably a twenty yard shot from Olympic that was judged to perfection by Dub's stand in keeper Kernan, who was waving the ball wide as it cannoned off the inside of the post and rolled along the line.
When the second half got underway, Dub wasted no time in getting their equaliser. A great run into the box from a Dub midfielder forced a good save from the home keeper only for O'Reilly to slide a brilliant equaliser into the empty net from 18 yards. Dub began to get on top and two minutes later found themselves in front. Hodgkinson picked the ball up out on the right before holding off 4 Olympic defenders and storming into the box. Just as he was about to shoot his legs were taken from underneath him and stand in ref Conan Hodgkinson (Chris' brother!) had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Chris picked himself up, verbally abused a few Olympic players and slid the resulting penalty into the net.
As the second half wore on Dub began to wilt in the scorching heat, and Olympic started to control the game. Dub soaked up everything Olympic could throw at them to secure a hard fought victory.
After the game the players headed out on the town for the night. A meal at a Chinese was followed by an alcohol fuelled evening that saw the bros Kernan show their age and depart the niteclub early, a player who will remain nameless going back to a party with a 45 yr old woman and another player storming around the hotel in drunken lust at half five in the morning looking for Big Brothers' Orlaith.
As check out time at the hotel arrived the next morning, and the team were preparing to leave, Big Brothers' Orlaith finally appeared. She happily posed for photo's with the team, and confirmed herself as an avid Dub fan, confessing that she frequently checks the website to see how the team are doing, and in particular her favourite player Donal McCann. She was particularly impressed when she heard he ate a used chicken wing that was lying outside room 107, spent 20 minutes on the lift looking for the first floor, spent three hours sleeping on a wet bathroom floor - apparently he could not find the door. Orlaith was also impressed by Donal's lack of charity work - not many people would attack someone collecting for the Niger appeal. For more information contact Chris Hodgkinson - he will give you a blow by blow account.
