The Dub management were extremely confident going into the match after a late night tactics discussion in the Rose and Crown where Shane Murphy and Kristian Hill had to be separated during a fight over the merits of playing the sweeper system. This was a suitable ending to the evening after Gareth Hustler Dickson (not named after the magazine) had claimed the held-every-so-often Dub FC Open Pool Championship.
Spirits were definitely raised after several spirits had been downed at the after-party party at Shanes house. The debate still continue as to who stole Art's shoes, mobile and wallet. No one is prepared t own up for fear of being dropped!
Dub were first out of the changing room and warmed up before any Adelaide members made an appearance. They were determined to be first out of the blocks and were given a great opportunity in a game where the opposition could only field 9 men. Dub gave a debut to Seamus Greene and welcomed back Sean Doherty after a long injury or something. Neil Smyth was also back in the starting eleven despite recurring problems...
Dub pushed the advantage from the whistle and got the dream start they needed after less than 2 minutes when Andy finished from short range in a penalty area melee (good word that). The second goal came within a minute as Seamus opened his account for the club having been set up by his cousin (?) Peter McToal. It seemed that Dub were going to completely dominate the match but Adelaide managed to get back into it after 15 minutes when their best player nutmegged Gareth on the edge of the box. Kristian + tackle + penalty area = penalty = goal. Cormac brought the lead back to 2 but Dub were again pegged back before the half time whistle went. Adelaide scored a well taken corner despite being outnumbered in the box.
Dub knew the match was there for the taking and an early second half goal for Cormac was one of the rare times the referee didn't blow for offside. In fact, the ref became more and more of a factor in the game as the whistle was overused. Seamus was set up by Michael Smyth for his second of the game. Art Kernan came on for the last ten minutes and showed some silky skills when setting up smyth and Doherty with superb through balls abd was unlucky to have a shot cleared by the keeper.
There was sill time for the referee gave Adelaide another penalty - this time for a deliberate clearance as Sean Doherty kicked the ball off the Adelaide player and out for a goal kick or so he thought. The ref had the eyes of the hawk for that one, able to make a decision from half a pitch away and with 2 players between him and the ball. Smiles all round. The game ended not a minute too soon as most players had given up getting any sensible decisions and Dub got their first league points of the year. Long may it continue.
