Dub got back to winning ways at last with a comprehensive 5-2 win at Ormeau park. The win was secured by Dub's own Holy Trinity with goals fro Hodgkinson (the Messiah) andKernan and McCusker. Both teams could muster only 11 players, with Mullan and Price stranded in Castlewellan with rubber legs after a more difficult than expected Carryduff training session.
Dub were determined not to start as sloppy as the previous week, and opened the scoring in under a minute when a rasping Hodgskinson cross lobbed the Trinity keeper. Boosted by this, Dub pushed forward looking for a second, and were rewarded when a Trinity defender tried a suicidal backpass under pressure from the Dub midfield. Big Chris was left with the easiest chance of the season and netted from 2 feet.
Sleeping sickness then firmly caught hold of Dub, as Trinity created several good chances, only to be repeatedly denied by outstanding saves from new dub keeper McSparran, including unconventional use of his face to stop a point bank blaster. Having weathered the storm, Dub pushed forward on the break and a cross from Chris presented Cormac with a gilt edged chance to make it 3-0. And surprisingly it was 3-0! Soon after McCusker hit a thunderous 25 yard drive into the top right hand corner. This was surely to be the defining point of his career and the opportunity to shake of the tag of miss of the season (4 times winner) but alas the referee harshly disallowed much to everyone's relief. This distracted the Dub players who failed to take heed of previous lapses and conceded from a corner with 2 mins of the half remaining.
Second half and Trinity started brightly, putting Dub under pressure for the first 10mins. The inevitable happened when Trinity found too much space down the wing and created a tap-in chance for one of their more rotund forwards, making it 3-2.
Things looked bleak at this point, but Dub showed the spirit which has been lacking in recent games and renewed their efforts. Chris bagged another, and created one for McCusker twho somehow managed to tap in from 6 yards. The moment of the match came as Chris (yet again, yawn) dispatched a perfect pass to Cormac, who was on the edge of the 6 yard box with an empty net to aim at. The net should have rustled, but the corner flag did instead. Mark your voting cards now lads, surely the miss of the season goes to a new owner this year!
The game finished 5-2, with Trinity missing a late penalty after Hatchet McCann brutally glanced past a Trinity forward in the box. The turning point of the season? Definitely with a good cup draw and Dub now getting a bit of momentum surely happier times lie ahead!
