John Quinn
Man of the match

Dub FC players managed to pull themselves away from their Christmas celebrations with almost all players passing the breathaliser test at Ormeau Park. A strong squad was boosted by the return of Hill, Kernan (Art) and traveller supreme Hodgkinson. John Quinn was restored to the starting line up. Smyth (like his car) was due to start but didn't.

Dub, spurred on by the prospect of a crate of beer for the man of the match, were determined to secure their eighth league victory. Not surprisingly this inspired Dickson to put in a terrific first half performance - scoring two and setting up the other two to help Dub to a 4-1 half time lead. Dickson's first goal was stolen from Mark Harvey. His shot was destined for the back of the net but Dickson, with the taste of Carlsberg on his lips, claimed to have touched the ball. Dickson's second came from a superb run from the half way line. Cormac Kernan ended his two game goal drought and Doherty added his customary goal as well. CFANI scored a penalty after McCusker showed timing as bad as Michael Smyth when challenging in the box. Dub could have conceeded another if McGaughey hadn't have made a John Magee (a fine tackle).

At half time Dickson said he couldn't do it all on his own and that Dub needed all hands to the pump. In the second half Quinn was probably the best player in the world. His performance secured the man of the match award and as Dickson faded he took control of the game. Cormac Kernan who holds the record for Dub's fastest ever first half goal also became the quickest player to score in a second half with a goal timed at 31 seconds. On 52 minutes Hill replaced the the ageing McGaughey and Art Kernan came on for the impressive but ghostly McToal. Cormac Kernan, faced with the prospect of being substituted, responded by scoring his hat-trick. Kernan junior hit the post and Cormac tucked in the rebound despite some determined and heroic defending by Sean Doherty. This act of kindness and sportsmanship to the opposing team can only have been inspired by his hero but with a poor disciplinary record I doubt if Sean will ever get a Nobel prize. Unfortunately Dub continued these acts of kindness by making a number of errors that led to the concession of three second half goals.

With Cormac now warming the bench and Hodgkinson to support him Doherty smelt goals. He got one from a Hill cross but missed a penalty. The keeper had been watching video footage of previous penalties and he guessed right which is were the ball went. Art Kernan was further denied by two saves the like of which have not been seen since the days of Gordon Banks. The highlight of the second half came when a Hill cross found Quinn who smashed the ball into the back of the net. Quinn left the changing room with a huge grin - "cheers lads, a goal, a game, a man of the match performance and a crate of beer - not bad".
