Sunday 28th October proved to be a significant day in the short history of the newly formed Dub FC. They were presented with their new football kit by John Ross on behalf of the Rose and Crown bar and they recorded their first ever league win in the Belfast Sunday Premier League.
Dub FC were formerly named Belfast Telecom and played in The Dunmurry Football League for 15 years. They reformed in the summer retaining most of last years team and recruiting a number of new players and they now play their matches at Cherryvale and Ormeau playing fields. The majority of players come from the Ormeau Road or Holylands area of South Belfast. When Phil Sheridan, manager of the Rose & Crown bar, was approached for sponsorship he said he would be delighted to get behind the local soccer team.
This was only Dub FC's second league match of the season having drawn with Adelaide the previous week. Dub were up against it early on and only two fine saves from Mark Donnelly prevented the much-fancied St Michael's from taking an early lead. St Michael's continued to dominate the match until Dub caught them on the break in the 25th minute when Jack Rogers played a terrific through ball to Art Kernan who coolly slid the ball beyond the advancing keeper.
Dub continued to gain in confidence and in the 40th minute a long throw by Ryan McGaughey was met with a thunderous header by John Quinn. St Michael's were relieved to be only 2-0 down at the break when Mark Harvey's effort went narrowly wide in the last minute of the half.
The third goal, however, didn't take long to come. Thirty seconds into the second half a neat move between Shane McCusker and Ryan McGaughey ended with a defence splitting pass to Cormac Kernan. The player manager made no mistake as he rifled the ball into the top corner. St Michael's finally broke through the Dub defence in the 55th minute when a shot from the edge of the area left Donnelly with no chance.
Dub continued to play on the break and midway through the second half Art Kernan got the goal that sealed the game. A terrific cross form the right by man of the match Cormac kernan was headed home by his brother Art. Thoughts of celebratory drinks in the Rose & Crown were temporarily put on hold when Mark Donnelly, who had made an impressive goalkeeping debut, was sent off for deliberate handball. He was replaced by Liam McCollum and but for a McGaughey goal line clearance St Michael's would have scored the resulting free kick. St Michael's continued to lay seige to the dub goal for the last 20 minutes but McCollum and the impressive defensive partnership of Gareth Dickson and Sean Donnelly helped Dub to hold out for a hard earned victory. The final score Dub FC 4 St Michael's 1.
