Colm Kernan inspired Dub FC to a comprehensive 7-2 victory over Glen Swifts at a sunny Cherryvale last Sunday. This win ensured that Dub maintained their fine start to the season. Dub are now fourth in the league with seven points from three games.
The turning point in this match came as early as the third minute. An attack down the right flank caught out the Dub defence with Kristian Hill upending the Glens attacker. The resulting penalty was saved by Colm Kernan's magnificent dive low to his right. This immediately lifted Dub and within ten minutes they were two goals in front. Both goals came as a result of fine midfield play orchestrared by Ryan McGaughey and Shane Murphy. The first goal was well finished by John Magee and the second was a spectacular diving header from player-manager Cormac Kernan.
Midway through the first half Michael Smyth took on the Glens defence single handedly scoring a spectacular solo effort. Soon after Shane Murphy, making his league debut, put in a fine centre that was drilled home by John Magee for his second goal of the day. On the stroke of half time the game was all but over as a contest when Cormac Kernan crossed from the left for Michael Smyth to slot home his seventh goal of the season leaving Dub leading 5-0 at the break.
The second half saw a spirited Glens team making a determined effort to salvage something from the match but fine goalkeeping from Colm Kernan kept them at bay. Despite this pressure Ryan McGaughey scored Dub's sixth of the day and Shane Murphy capped a fine display with a coolly taken finish. Jack Rogers pushed forward in an attempt to gain his first goal for the club before moving to Tanzania next week. This move backfired as Roger's defensive abilities were sorely missed with Dub conceeding two goals late on. This, however, did not take the shine of Dub's biggest ever victory and sets them up well for next weeks clash with league leaders Hotspurs.
