Fresh from last week's resounding 5-0 victory and having already qualified for the quarter finals of the shield, a confident Dub made their way to Cherryvale for the last shield league game. Old habits die hard, however, and at 1:15pm a number of players still had not arrived. With the fines system for late arrival in full swing, this must mean that the club will be able to buy Cormac an even more extravagent trophy this year for the statistic he tops at the end of the season.
With Deanby fielding only 9 men, Dub soon began to create chances and opened their account as early as the 5th minute. A brisk walk by Cormac down the right wing followed by a cross into the box resulted in Phil hitting the net. Just a few minutes later a similar move this time ended with Gareth increasing Dub's lead to two. Di Canio style celebrations were hardly appropriate, but a Dickson-style leap in the air and primeavel scream were unleashed nonetheless.
Dub really began to turn the screw, with successive corners from Gareth resulting in successive goals for Phil. Soon after Cormac yet agains stole down the right and this time found McCusker in the box to open his account for the season (in competitive games anyway, but they're the only stats that count!). The goal frenzy continued two minutes later, with Phil turning provider to give Cormac his first goal of the game.
By this stage, Mullan's blood alcohol level had fallen to a level where he could now see a single football. Armed with this advantage, he started to run about like the dirty wee fecker...err..like the highly skilled competitive footballer he is. He celebrated his new found sobriety with a clever lob to beat the advancing Deanby keeper. The keeper barely had time to say "For Feck's sake lads, it's 7-0", before it was 8-0. JQ cunningly ignored the screaming McGaughey and crossed to Dickson on the left. Two seconds later the ball was in the back of the net, via yet another Phil header. Half-time 8-0.
The second half saw a number of early subs, most notably that of Phil - who having overtaken Cormac as the club's current top scorer surely has secured himself a place on the bench for the rest of the season. Understandably, the tempo died a little, as the 8-0 half time scoreline sank in. Despite this, Dub produced successive clear cut opportunites, which were ended by successive Van Nistelrooy penalty-style finishing. With the imminent unavailability of regular forwards Cormac and Chris, surely the manager will have to look to those players he subbed at half time in this game to fill the void....
The second half duck was broken when a fine through-ball by Quinn was met by Mullan who coolly made it 9-0. Deanby didn't completely give up, however, and produced a goal after a mix up in the Dub defence in dying minutes. Full time 9-1.
